Sweetly Successful Launch Party The Boston in Northbridge was the setting for a Sweet event last Saturday night with Sweet Surrender  launching their Ordinary Hero EP and premiering the video for their single 9Teen . The band let their hair down Saturday night from a schedule of continuous bookings since May and enjoyed the enthusiastic atmosphere for their event. The evening kicked off with energetic sets from Command A Panda and Corio Fire  with each band impressing punters through their sets.   Command A Panda Corio Fire The third band up, Curbside Drive   brought punters to life with a lively performance to set the tone for the rest of the evening. Curbside Drive Sweet Surrender took the stage last to preview their video for 9Teen before tearing through a set that got people on the dance floor. Almost Famous at Newport Hotel 22 September 2017

Image
Almost Famous...on a Friday night We all have those things that for whatever reasons, we put into the "I'll get around to it" basket in life and once you get around to it...you kick yourself for not doing it sooner. I lived that epiphany last Friday night.  For months, I've had a friends band, Almost Famous on my "to see" list. Mark the date of 22 September 2017 and the location the Newport Hotel  as the time and place that everything came into alignment. Almost Famous in full flight (Elena Butskikh) From the opening strains of I Kissed A Girl , the collective of Melanie Flynn (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Glen Hewitt (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Francesco Cangiano (guitar, backing vocals), Bryan Duke (bass, backing vocals) and Boris Kosse (drums) caught the ears of punters wandering in after watching footy. The crew never missed a beat as they gave their all in performances of What I've Done and Who Knew before launching into an attenti...

Divinyl Intervention

Image
Market City Rocked on Saturday night With a free Saturday night up my sleeve for once, I ventured out to the  Market City Tavern  to catch a performance by  Amph/lett  (Divinyls) and  Bon's Salute  (AC/DC). After hearing bits about the bands for a few weeks leading up and I can't say I was disappointed in their performances. First up, Amph/lett featuring Tanya Harding on vocals flashed me back immediately to 1986 in New York where I had the pleasure of seeing the original Chrissy and crew for the only time. Though I'm not nineteen anymore...the effect was very similar! Tanya Harding of Amph/lette The band powered through the hits of the Divinyls flawlessly adding their own subtle signatures to some of the tunes. Harding flaunted, strutted and teased as much as the original while singing powerfully in a compelling set that featured standards such as Pleasure and Pain, Boys in Town and of course, the sensual, I Touch Myself. Band ...

Venue Final

Three tipped for state finals In a night full of great performances where not a lot separated the the eleven contestants, the judges were left with the daunting task of picking three from the bunch to represent South Street Ale House  in the state final which will be held at the Charles Hotel  in North Perth on 2 September 2017. Sharyn Fleming The place was full as all contestants had their fan bases with them on the evening in anticipation of performances to come. Honestly, they could not have been very disappointed in the results as each singer put their best effort into their songs. Again, many genres were covered with renditions of familiar favourites and other songs unfamiliar to most. Antonio Corea After all of the singing was done, there would not have been more than 20-30 points difference between the collective.  Celeste Eden At the end of the night , the three singers going to the state final and their alternates were: ...

i-Sing Semis complete

Semi Final 2 of i-Sing hotly contested South Street Ale House Last Saturday nights semi final heat for i-Sing Australia 2017  could bring forth several adjectives to describe the action on the night with competitive, awesome and entertaining being at the top of the list. At the end of the night, a blanket could have been thrown over the bunch as not much separated the entire lineup of singers. Celeste Eden There were several classic songs performed yet again from various genres with each contestant adding their own unique twist. The judges were left with very tough decisions and in the end could not decide on just six singers to round out the field of ten finalists so the second semi final in the end saw seven singers advancing. They are in no particular order: Shae Pakulsky Beth Lambert Celeste Eden Chris Ehlers Antonio Corea Luciana Kember Dave Norton Semi Final 2 winners Once again Bruno and the fine staff at South Street Ale House ...

The crowd at the venue was very encouraging to all with some singing along with the performers while enjoying the atmosphere.  Semi Final 1 winners In the end, there was little between the four people who advanced  with each showing uniqueness and versatility. For any that missed out in earlier heats, drop down on Friday night and give your best shot. Have a shot or two from the bar while you're at it along with a tasty treat from the menu. Heidi kills it in Perth Just about the time that   questions such as ... wonder what happened to Killing Heidi? Wonder where they are now? Wonder if Jessie and Ella still have dreads? ... pop into your brain ... you happen to hear the buzz, the rumours, the possibility .. then, it's official ... The Reunion!! Killing Heidi roared into Perth's Astor Theatre  Friday night seeming to have never missed a beat and were so unlike a band that has been on a hiatus of sorts for ten years. The raucous crowd were full of enthusiasm and overwhelmed by the genuine electric energy from the stage. The tone for the evening was set by by the delightful Elli Schoen . This young lady and band out of Fremantle surprised with a thoughtful, melodic performance replete with a powerhouse voice that belied her demure stature. Having a listen to her Gold Mess EP or catching a local performance would be well worth it. Elli Schoen Though I have heard Paper Doll and 12th of July, ...

At the end of the night, we have advancing to the next round: Renee - Black Velvet Celeste - Somebody Bring Me Some Water Beth - What's Going On   Renee performing Black Velvet Beth asking What's Going On The three ladies gave strong performances on the night with songs that required it, well done.
