Almost Famous at Newport Hotel 22 September 2017
Almost Famous...on a Friday night
We all have those things that for whatever reasons, we put into the "I'll get around to it" basket in life and once you get around to it...you kick yourself for not doing it sooner. I lived that epiphany last Friday night. For months, I've had a friends band, Almost Famous on my "to see" list. Mark the date of 22 September 2017 and the location the Newport Hotel as the time and place that everything came into alignment.
Almost Famous in full flight (Elena Butskikh)
From the opening strains of I Kissed A Girl, the collective of Melanie Flynn (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Glen Hewitt (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Francesco Cangiano (guitar, backing vocals), Bryan Duke (bass, backing vocals) and Boris Kosse (drums) caught the ears of punters wandering in after watching footy. The crew never missed a beat as they gave their all in performances of What I've Done and Who Knew before launching into an attention grabbing performance of Rolling In Deep. It didn't stop there as Almost Famous dug deep to pull out the classic Boys of Summer and surprised with a rocking rendition of Uptown Funk. The band closed their first set with a killer version of Somebody Told Me.

By the start of the second set, Almost Famous was fairly famous through the hotel and the room filled with punters waiting to be wowed...they were not disappointed other than being sorry for not getting there in time for the full show! Numb and Apologize back to back were flawless as was the triplicate of Are You Gonna Go My Way, Kryptonite and an electric version of Zombie. The band closed their second set and the night with none other than Welcome to the Jungle where Ms Flynn tore seamlessly through the vocals while the rest of the band equalled her energy level leaving the crowd in awe and wanting more.
The Stage
While lots of songs have been mentioned, Chandelier, Mr Brightside and Everlong were also crowd favourites.
Almost Famous would have to be at the top of Perth bands for live performance and raw energy. The dedication to their craft, polish and professionalism comes through in their performance. If an opportunity arises to see them live around town...don't miss it! You can keep abreast of the band through their website www.almostfamousperth.com or their Facebook Page www.facebook.com/almostfamousperth .
Faces of Rock Almost Famous (Elena Butskikh)
While the band impressed the punters, the band and this writer were very impressed with the venue, staff and the atmosphere of the Newport Hotel. Kudos on an awesome venue!
You can keep track of upcoming events hopefully including an Almost Famous return on the Newport website at www.thenewport.com or their Facebook Page www.facebook.com/NewportHotel .
