Vividly Unleashed

Perth awash with Living Colour

The Astor Theatre in Perth provided an intimate backdrop and solid foundation for the explosion of sound, energy and emotion that is a Living Colour performance.

In their first performance after the untimely departure of contemporary Chris Cornell the band wowed from start to finish. They threw in a few teasers from their forthcoming album Shade (due out in September) to go with several of their timeless classics as they closed out their first Australian tour since 2014 and first Perth appearance in quite some time.

For the fans of Perth, this night was more than a concert or performance, it was an event. The crowd had a mix of "there from the start" fans through to younger ones who've had the pleasure of seeing the band in recent years.

Appropriately, the drum kit of Will Calhoun had an Aussie theme with one of the bass drums depicting Uluru and the other sporting an Aboriginal flag. Said drums, combined with the thumping bass of Doug Wimbish provided an expansive backdrop for Vernon Reid to set flight and take the crowd through a kaleidoscope of guitar goodness. Of course in the hotness of the house the coolest character, Corey Glover brought it all together and the band tore through the night with the crowd enthusiastically singing along.

The band wowed with Living Colour classics Middle Man, Nothingness, Desperate People, Type, Elvis Is Dead and finished up with the powerful Cult of Personality. Of course that wasn't enough and the band stormed back onto the stage with Times Up and finally an ode to The Clash with Should I Stay or Should I Go. Additionally, there were a couple of brief interludes featuring Police and Thieves along with a hint of Midnight Oil and James Brown.

Whatchu talking bout Vernon?

The most powerful, poignant moment of the night came when Vernon stepped to the microphone and announced an homage to Chris Cornell leading the band into a powerful performance of Blow Up the Outside World that shook the foundation of every soul present with raw emotion. Well done my brothers, well done.

In tribute to Chris Cornell

With promises of a return sometime after their album release in September, the band headed back to American shores for shows on the West Coast, their first ever shows in Hawaii and a couple of other stops before invading Europe with the launch of Shade.

We look forward to having you back on the West Side of "Oz" again!
